Effective Use of Technology Crucial for the Growth of Digital Finance and Fintech: Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor

A seminar on digital finance, the growth of fintech, technology-driven innovation, and the future of the banking system in Bangladesh was held at the Bangladesh Bank Training Academy (BBTA).

The seminar, titled “Digital Finance, Fintech and Future of Banking in Bangladesh,” took place on September 29 at the academy’s A. K. N. Ahmed Auditorium. It featured detailed discussions on the current landscape, expanding growth, potential, and future challenges of digital finance and fintech within the country’s banking sector.

Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman attended the event as the chief guest. Md. Obaed Ullah Chowdhury, Executive Director of the Bangladesh Bank Training Academy, delivered the welcome address.

Muhammad Manjur Mahmud, President of DataSoft Systems Bangladesh Limited, presented the keynote paper. His presentation highlighted current trends in digital finance and fintech, the use of technology in Bangladesh’s financial sector, the rapid expansion of digital banking, and the potential for technology-driven innovation in the future banking system.

A panel discussion followed, featuring Shunman Ershad Faiz, Managing Director of Dhaka Bank PLC; Md. Ashraful Alam, Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank; Debdulal Roy, Senior Faculty at BIBM (on deputation) and Executive Director (ICT) of Bangladesh Bank; and Md. Motasin Billah, Administrator of Nagad Limited and Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank. Md. Obaed Ullah Chowdhury moderated the panel discussion.

During the discussion, the speakers emphasized the growth of digital finance and fintech, innovative financial services, and the effective and appropriate use of technology in the future banking system. Discussions also covered various aspects such as the ‘One Person, One ID’ concept, data management and secure data sharing, the use of artificial intelligence, and ensuring interoperability. Speakers highlighted the need to enhance the capabilities of banks and financial institutions—keeping pace with technological advancements—and to expand innovative financial services.

During the seminar’s Q&A session, participants raised various questions regarding digital finance, fintech, digital banking, and technology-driven financial services. Speakers and panelists answered these questions and shared their insights on the relevant topics.

Executive Directors and Directors of Bangladesh Bank, along with faculty members of the Bangladesh Bank Training Academy, participated in the seminar.

The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks following the Q&A session.
