Railways Ministry Advisor Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan said that initiatives are being taken to reduce the losses of Bangladesh Railways. For this, we are taking effective measures to reduce waste and corruption.
He said, ‘Bangladesh Railways is a loss-making institution. It costs about two and a half taka to earn one taka here. There are two reasons behind this – corruption and waste in the railways. We are taking effective measures to reduce this waste and corruption.’
The advisor said this at the inauguration ceremony of a new pair of commuter trains on the Dhaka-Narasingdi-Bhairab Bazar route and the replacement of the rakes of the Narayanganj computer train running on the Dhaka-Narayanganj route (with upgraded coaches) at Kamalapur Railway Station today, Wednesday.
He said, ‘Another reason for the losses of the railways is the transportation of passengers without tickets. The price of railway services is very low. Many people do not pay the fare by boarding the train. If this continues, the railway service will be stopped. If the losses increase, we will have no choice but to reduce the railway service.’
Regarding corruption in the railways, the advisor said, ‘The Railways Secretary and DG have been given specific targets. We will monitor how much money is spent to earn one taka. It must be brought below 2 immediately. To do this, they will have to be forced to reduce corruption.’
Senior officials of the Railways Ministry and Bangladesh Railways were present at the inauguration ceremony.
