E-commerce should be a component of poverty alleviation: Faiz Ahmed Tayyab

Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor, Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, said this at a view-exchange meeting with representatives of the Postal Department, Mailing Operator and Courier Service Licensing Authority and e-commerce at Dak Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka on Wednesday (14 May 2025).

At the beginning of the discussion, Faiz Ahmed Tayyab said that due to the corruption that has taken place in the e-commerce sector during the previous government’s tenure, people have lost trust in this sector. In addition to restoring that trust, the Postal Department and private institutions must work together to expand e-commerce from cities to villages so that everyone can benefit.

The entrepreneurs present drew the attention of the Special Assistant to the introduction of WiFi service at the post office, use of the post office warehouse, operating unused vehicles on rent, relaxing the conditions for compensation in the rules, reducing the level of license, increasing the license period from two years to five years, allowing courier service vehicles to operate 24 hours a day, increasing the postal service hours to facilitate the transportation of goods, and allowing courier service vehicles to operate during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azhar closure.

Faiz Ahmed Tayyab expressed his opinion that the conditions related to compensation in the rules will be suspended for three months and that unlicensed traders will be brought under license. He urged the entrepreneurs to ensure that they receive ratings from the service recipients.

He highlighted the ‘Reverse E-Commerce’ plan to spread e-commerce business from village to city and even outside the country instead of going from city to village.

The Special Assistant said, we want to establish the e-commerce sector as a basic tool for poverty alleviation. For example, if someone wants to deliver their manufactured products from villages to consumers in Dhaka. You can speed up poverty alleviation by adding the value chain in between. We want to ensure access to customers by spreading this reverse channel from villages to cities or abroad.

Faiz Ahmed Tayyab said that a committee will be formed to change the policy. He instructed the concerned to inventory the unused vehicles of the post.

The Director of Postal Services said in the meeting that the GPS tracking system of the post will be fully operational within the next two months and the API can also be shared with private entrepreneurs.

The meeting was chaired by Director General of the Department of Posts SM Shahab Uddin, and mailing operators and courier service authorities, representatives of e-commerce and officials of the Department of Posts were present.
