The Institute of Nutrition and Food Science (INFS) and the Department of History at the University of Dhaka hosted fresher’s receptions and cultural programs on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, in honor of new undergraduate students and outgoing graduates.

The Department of History organized its fresher’s reception and a vibrant cultural program at the TSC auditorium. The event was presided over by the Department Chairperson, Professor Dr. Ashfaq Hossain. Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, along with Professor Dr. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and retired Professor Syed Anwar Hossain, graced the occasion as special speakers. Associate Professor Mithun Kumar Saha conducted the event.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed highlighted the unique contribution of Dhaka University in various fields including education, research, sports, culture and said that parents send their children to study in this university with deep trust and faith. Students also get admission in this university through highly competitive examination with many dreams. To fulfill this dream, students need to set the right goals and be responsible. Dhaka University family will always support the students and parents with utmost sincerity in realizing their dreams. He urged the students to develop themselves as efficient human resources by taking knowledge and guidance from the renowned teachers and researchers of the university, making proper use of the library and laboratories and taking advantage of various opportunities including sports and co-curricular activities.

It is to be noted that the students who obtained the highest CGPA in the graduation (honors) and master’s examinations of 2023 were awarded at the history department’s freshman admission ceremony. Honorable students are Rupam Ruddor who won 1st position in Graduation (Honors) category, Shiuli Mollah who got 2nd position and Bushra Binte Alam who got 3rd position jointly and Md. Rahim Mia. The students who secured the highest CGPA in all three groups in the Masters class were – Farzana Parveen, Pooja Das and Suraiya Yasmin Souchna. Besides, two 2nd year students of the department were awarded for their achievements in sports. They are Dia Siddiqui, the national archery team player representing Bangladesh in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and Nilufa Yasmin Neela, the national women’s football team player participating in the 7th SAFF Women’s Championship-2024. In the 2nd phase of the program, an interesting cultural program was performed.
