Desk Report:
Dr. Zubaida Rahman, Vice President of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation and wife of Tarique Rahman, has called for the implementation of integrated programs across all 64 districts of the country to ensure proper treatment for those suffering from osteoporosis and to raise public awareness about the condition.
She made this call while speaking as the chief guest at a scientific seminar held on Tuesday (October 20, 2026) at the convention hall of the Super Specialized Hospital building at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in the capital, in observance of World Osteoporosis Day.
The seminar, titled “Osteoporosis: A Preventable Epidemic,” was organized by the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB).
Dr. Zubaida Rahman described osteoporosis as a “silent” disease. It causes bones to become weak, thin, and porous, significantly increasing the risk of sudden fractures. This disrupts the normal lives of those affected and diminishes their ability to perform daily activities.
She noted that a large number of people in Bangladesh are suffering from bone fractures and long-term distress due to osteoporosis, emphasizing that urgent, effective action must be taken to address this situation.
Dr. Zubaida Rahman further stated that through collective effort, it is possible to extend osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services to people in every region of the country. This requires the implementation of nationwide integrated programs, alongside efforts to increase general public awareness about the disease.
She underscored the importance of ensuring medical care for those affected by osteoporosis and called for a collaborative initiative from all relevant stakeholders toward the prevention and management of the condition.
