Denmark and Bangladesh Pledge Stronger Cooperation on Justice, Labour, and Green Growth

Denmark and Bangladesh have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties during a meeting between Danish Ambassador Christian Brix Møller and Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam in Dhaka.

The discussions reviewed the robust Danish-Bangladeshi partnership and focused on expanding cooperation across justice, reform, investment, and green growth initiatives. Ambassador Møller updated the Foreign Secretary on Denmark’s support for the Interim Government’s justice and reform agenda, including the establishment of the UN Human Rights Office in Bangladesh, rebuilding of the National Human Rights Commission, media freedom reforms, and rehabilitation of torture victims.

Both sides also exchanged views on the Rohingya crisis and ongoing preparations for the upcoming international conference on the Rohingyas to be held in New York on 30 September.

Highlighting Denmark’s growing investment footprint in Bangladesh, the Ambassador outlined progress on key projects such as the Laldia Container Terminal in Chattogram led by MAERSK/APMT to transform trade and logistics capacity; Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ 500 MW offshore wind project near Cox’s Bazar; and the Saidabad Water Treatment Plant Project aimed at providing clean water for 6 million residents in Dhaka.

Ambassador Møller reaffirmed Denmark’s strong support for the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) vision of achieving carbon-neutral shipping by 2050 and urged Bangladesh to support the implementation of the IMO Net Zero Agreement at the October conference. He noted that Bangladesh’s support would align the country with global climate ambitions while enhancing its position as a competitive and sustainable international shipping hub.

On labour issues, the Ambassador emphasized Denmark’s backing for Bangladesh’s ongoing labour law reforms, highlighting that, as an ILO Governing Body member and EU representative in the 3+5+1 dialogue format, Denmark strongly supports the Interim Government’s efforts to align the Bangladesh Labour Act with ILO standards—an important step toward fulfilling EU GSP+ criteria.

The meeting also explored potential partnerships in green maritime solutions and the blue economy, reaffirming Denmark’s commitment to support Bangladesh’s transition from a traditional production hub to a sustainable production hub—promoting green growth, fair labour standards, and sustainable investments for the future.
