Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus has announced the formal inauguration of the construction of the much-awaited rail and road bridge over the Karnaphuli River in Kalurghat, Chittagong.
He unveiled the foundation stone plaque from the Circuit House in Chittagong at 11 am today, Wednesday (May 14, 2025).
Road Transport and Bridge Advisor Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan said that the people of South Chittagong have long demanded the construction of a new Kalurghat Bridge over the Karnaphuli River. The people of South Chittagong, including Boalkhali, are elated as its construction work has begun. The bridge that exists now was built in 1931. If its lifespan is considered to be 80 years, then it expired in 2011, he said.
The work on the new bridge is scheduled to be completed by 2029 and commissioned in 2030, he said.
Announcing the inauguration, the chief advisor said, “I have many memories of Kalurghat Bridge. This bridge has great historical importance. Today, residents of Boalkhali are also present here. Kalurghat Bridge is their much-desired project. Once it is completed, many hardships of the people of Chittagong will end.”
