In recognition of their outstanding contribution to the protection of human rights, the Canadian High Commission has presented the High Commission of Canada Human Rights Defender Award to two prominent human rights activists, Kalpana Akhter and Rani Yan Yan, on the occasion of International Human Rights Day in Dhaka. The award was presented at a prestigious ceremony organized at the Official Residence of the Canadian High Commission in Dhaka. Ambassadors and diplomats from various countries, UN partners, civil society representatives, academics and invited guests were present at the ceremony.


As a labor rights activist, Kalpana Akhter has been working tirelessly to protect workers’ rights and advance human rights for a long time. On the other hand, Rani Yan Yan, who serves as an advisor to the Chakma Circle of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, is a committed voice in protecting the rights of indigenous peoples. The life stories of both of them reflect strength, determination and a lifelong commitment to building a more just and inclusive society.

The Canadian High Commission deeply appreciates the contributions of these two human rights defenders, saying that their work in protecting and promoting human rights in Bangladesh is inspiring. The High Commission congratulates Kalpana Akhter and Rani Yan Yan on receiving the award and commends their continued contribution to protecting human rights.
