The recent attack on Mahmud Jeans Limited, located in the Chandra area of Kaliakair Upazila, Gazipur, has sparked serious concerns within Bangladesh’s garment industry. At a time when the sector is gradually recovering from multiple crises, this unfortunate incident has raised questions about the industry’s overall stability.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has strongly condemned the attack, labeling it a significant threat to the nation’s economy and industrial sector. The organization has urged law enforcement agencies to take swift action and ensure the security of factories.
Mahmud Jeans Limited is a compliant factory that, in 2022, procured yarn worth Tk 120 crore after securing a major order from a U.S.-based buyer. However, the order was canceled due to the combined impacts of the Russia-Ukraine war and the post-COVID situation. Additionally, disruptions in gas supply created further operational challenges for the factory.
Amid ongoing financial strain, the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) declared the factory closed on October 9, following a tripartite decision. Salaries for September were paid to workers on October 23, while back pay for staff was cleared on November 16. Despite efforts by the factory’s management to settle final dues by selling assets, financial constraints made it impossible to fulfill payments by November 28.
During this challenging period, Md. Rafi Mahmud, son of the factory owner, engaged in discussions with workers to address their concerns. However, a group of instigators attacked him, causing injuries and detaining him inside the factory. He was later rescued by the military and industrial police.
Bangladesh’s garment sector provides employment to approximately 4 million workers and sustains the livelihoods of over 50 million people. It has also established a strong reputation for the country in international markets.
Incidents like the attack on Mahmud Jeans pose a risk to the industry’s credibility. The BGMEA has demanded swift legal action against those responsible and emphasized the need for collective efforts from the government, entrepreneurs, and labor leaders to ensure peace, stability, and security within the industry.
Maintaining a peaceful environment is essential for the garment sector’s progress. Preventing the recurrence of such incidents requires coordinated efforts from all stakeholders.
