BGMEA and Joint Forces hold meeting on labor situation in garment industry

A meeting was held on Tuesday (December 3, 2024) at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara between BGMEA, Bangladesh Army, Industrial Police, Department of Factory Inspection, DC Dhaka District, DC Gazipur District, DC Narayanganj District, DGFI, NSI, SB, DB and representatives of garment factories on the ongoing labor situation in the garment industry.

The meeting was chaired by BGMEA Administrator Md. Anwar Hossain and led by GOC of the 9th Infantry Division, Major General Md. Moin Khan, OSP, NDC, PSC, on behalf of the Joint Forces. Additional IGP of Industrial Police Md. Chibgat Ullah, PPM, was also present.

Members of the supporting committee formed to manage BGMEA were also present in the discussion.

At the meeting, BGMEA Administrator Md. Anwar Hossain said, the way the Bangladesh Army and various law enforcement agencies are working with patience and prudence to maintain the law and order situation in all industrial factories, including the garment industry, in various industrial areas including Gazipur, and the way they are involved in the reconstruction of the country and the revival of the economy is highly commendable.

The BGMEA Administrator sought the cooperation of the Bangladesh Army and law enforcement agencies in maintaining good law and order in all industrial factories, including the garment industry, especially in making the garment industry free from terrorism.

The meeting discussed in detail various law and order problems in the country’s industrial factories. The factory representatives expressed their respective views on maintaining peaceful peace and order in the industrial sector.

It was unanimously decided in the meeting that if any distance or conflict arises between the owners and workers on wages or any other issue, all the concerned representatives will resolve it through discussion. Everyone should be vigilant to ensure that there is no labor unrest.

The army said that the army is working to maintain a safe and secure environment in the industrial areas. The factories were also urged to file cases against criminals identified through CCTV.

Major General Md. Moin Khan, OSP, NDC, PSC, assured the garment entrepreneurs that the Bangladesh Army is by the side of the industry in all situations. With the direct cooperation of the army, 99% of the factories in Gazipur, Savar-Ashulia, Dhamrai, Narayanganj DMP areas are currently undergoing revival.

He said that at this time of building a new Bangladesh, the army will continue to provide cooperation to maintain a fair production environment in the garment factories and keep the wheels of the economy moving.

The industrial police said that no one is above the law. Any attempt to create any kind of chaos in the industry will be strictly prevented and those involved will be brought under the law.

At the meeting, all parties pledged to work together to maintain fair labor conditions.
