Beijing has proposed to build a regional economic corridor from Bangladesh to China via Myanmar. The proposal was raised during a bilateral meeting between Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, on Friday (June 26, 2026).

Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson Mahdi Amin gave this information at a press conference held at the Diaoyutai Hotel in Beijing after the meeting.

He said that in the meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and President Xi Jinping, detailed discussions were held on strengthening connectivity between the two countries. At that time, a proposal was made to build an economic corridor from Bangladesh to China via Myanmar. The main goal of this corridor will be to increase the scope of Bangladesh’s economy, expand regional trade and transactions, and develop a multimodal transport system.

Mahdi Amin further said that China has expressed interest in the modernization of Chittagong Port and developing it as a regional transshipment and commercial hub in the meeting. He said that Beijing wants to cooperate so that Chittagong Port can play an effective role not only for Bangladesh but also in the commercial activities of neighboring countries.

In addition, China has also expressed interest in increasing the capacity of Mongla Port, modernizing it and making it a more service-oriented and competitive port. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office said that fruitful discussions have taken place between the two countries in this regard.
