Begum Khaleda Zia’s contribution to bringing the garment industry to the world stage is undeniable: Selim Rahman

Staff Correspondent:

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has organized a special condolence meeting and prayer mahfil to pray for the eternal peace of the departed soul of Begum Khaleda Zia, the three-time former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and BNP Chairperson, and national leader.

The condolence meeting and prayer mahfil was held on Monday (January 12, 2026) afternoon at the Nurul Quader Auditorium of the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, the capital. BGMEA Acting President Selim Rahman presided over it.

BGMEA Senior Vice President Enamul Khan Bablu, Vice President Md. Rezwan Selim, Vice President (Finance) Mizanur Rahman, Vice President Shehab Udduzza Chowdhury, members of the organization’s board of directors, general members and eminent persons of the garment sector.

Former President of BGMEA Kazi Moniruzzaman and Director Dr. Rashid Ahmed Hossaini delivered brief speeches at the beginning of the program. They remembered with deep respect the uncompromising and historic contribution of the national leader Begum Khaleda Zia in establishing democracy and the country’s long political journey.

In his speech, Acting President of BGMEA Selim Rahman said, “Begum Khaleda Zia was an uncompromising leader and a visionary statesman. She was a true friend of the garment industry of Bangladesh.” He said that in the early nineties, when the country’s garment industry was going through its infancy, Begum Khaleda Zia played an important role in the development of the industry by providing various government facilities and cash incentives. During his tenure, Bangladesh’s garment exports crossed the $1 billion milestone for the first time.

Selim Rahman further said, “In 2004, during the abolition of the quota system (MFA Phase Out), she took a far-sighted decision by forming a National Coordination Committee, the benefits of which are still being enjoyed by the industry.”

He also highlighted the groundbreaking steps taken by BGMEA such as delegating the power to issue UD and UP, launching a free market economy, facilitating business, reducing the cost of doing business, and introducing stipends for women’s education.

The program was hosted by BGMEA Director Dr. Rashid Ahmed Hossaini. At this time, a special video documentary on the life and work of Begum Khaleda Zia was screened, highlighting her contribution to the country’s economy, restoration of democracy, women’s empowerment, and especially the development of the garment industry.

At the end of the discussion meeting, a special prayer was held, seeking forgiveness for the departed soul and the peace, prosperity, and well-being of the country and nation.
