Ajit Singh, the High Commissioner of Canada to Bangladesh, met with Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir to further strengthen trade, investment and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and Canada.
The meeting, held at the Commerce Minister’s office at the Secretariat on Sunday (April 19, 2026), resulted in fruitful discussions on various important aspects of bilateral relations.
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said that the current government is giving special importance to attracting domestic and foreign investment in the renewable energy sector. He said that the government has already started activities to generate 10,000 megawatts of solar power. Stating that necessary policy and institutional support will be provided to investors in this sector, he urged Canadian entrepreneurs to invest in the solar power sector in Bangladesh.
Canadian High Commissioner Ajit Singh, referring to the existing strong relations between Bangladesh and Canada, said that there is huge potential for expanding trade and investment between the two countries. He said that a large number of Bangladeshi expatriates are living in Canada, who are making a significant contribution to the economies of both countries.
He also said that Canadian investors are interested in investing in Bangladesh in the agri-food, fintech and renewable energy sectors, especially solar power. He also expressed hope that the friendly relations between the two countries will be further strengthened through the expansion of trade.
Additional Secretary (Export) of the Ministry of Commerce Md. Abdur Rahim Khan and Additional Secretary (IIT) Shibir Bichitra Barua were present in the meeting.
