Bangladesh hosts 60 out of top 100 LEED certified factories across globe

60 of the world’s top 100 LEED certified green factories (LEED) are in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) made the demand on Friday (August 16). Through this, the number of LEED certified factories in the country stood at 226.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a globally recognized green building rating system that emphasizes environmental responsibility and energy efficiency.

A factory has to meet nine conditions in order to be certified environmentally friendly by the US Green Building Council (USGBC). It has total 110 marks allotted. In which a factory gets more than 80 lead platinum, 60-79 lead gold, 50-59 lead silver and 40-49 lead certified certificate.

The top two newly certified factories are Sadatia Sweaters Limited located in Diakhali and Molla Bazar in Ashulia, Dhaka and Executive Greentex Limited located in Mulayed area of ​​Sreepur Upazila, Gazipur. The factory achieved scores of 91 and 69 in the two Platinum and Gold categories respectively.

With the addition of these two factories, the number of lead certified factories in Bangladesh stands at 226. Of these, 89 are platinum, 123 are gold, 10 are silver and four are certified factories.

According to the BGMEA press release, despite the challenges of the global economic context and the current national and geopolitical events, Bangladesh’s ready-made garment industry continues to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to resilience and sustainable growth.

This progress towards achieving a significant number of LEED certifications highlights the proactive approach to environmentally sustainable development and strengthening the industry’s position as a reliable sourcing destination.

It also said, ‘We have consistently prioritized the sustainability of our operations. It also ensures that our growth is in line with global best practices and environmental responsibilities.”

According to BGMEA, this achievement has brought Bangladesh to the top of the global sustainable fashion movement. Out of 100 LEED-certified green factories worldwide, 60 are located in Bangladesh. On the other hand, 18 of the top 20 LEED certified factories in the world are in Bangladesh. Among them, SM Sourcing of Gazipur’s Konabari has been recognized as the world’s top eco-friendly factory by getting the highest score. The factory scored 106 out of 110 marks.

Other leading eco-friendly factories in the country include Green Textiles in Mymensingh, Net Asia and Integra Dresses in Gazipur, Remy Holdings and Fatulla Apparels in Narayanganj, Lida Textiles and Dyeing and Lease Fashion Industries in Gazipur and Tarasima Apparels in Manikganj.
