Spanish Ambassador to Bangladesh Gabriel María Sistiaga Ochoa de Chinchetru paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (8 June 2026) morning.
During the meeting, both sides reiterated their commitment to further strengthen bilateral relations of mutual interest. They discussed various aspects of expanding cooperation in trade, investment, supply chain, railways, sports, culture, education and skill development, migration, people-to-people contact, and peace and security. They also exchanged views on further dynamizing relations through organizing bilateral consultative meetings and exchanging high-level visits.
The Ambassador congratulated Bangladesh on its election as the President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the 2026-2027 term. The State Minister said that strengthening cooperation in both bilateral and multilateral fields is very important. He stressed the need for more sustained attention and support from the international community to resolve the Rohingya crisis and sought Spain’s support at the United Nations for Bangladesh’s LDC transition process.
Both sides highlighted the importance of signing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union, which would further expand Bangladesh-Spain trade and investment relations. The meeting also exchanged views on various regional and global issues and emphasized the need to strengthen peace, stability and international cooperation.
