Bangladesh and Japan have signed a significant agreement on the transfer of defense equipment and technology, marking a new milestone in bilateral defense cooperation between the two countries. The agreement was signed on Tuesday (3 February 2026) at Dhaka Cantonment under the overall supervision of the Armed Forces Division (AFD).

On behalf of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the agreement was signed by Lieutenant General SM Kamrul Hassan, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division. The Japanese side was represented by His Excellency Saida Shinichi, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh.
The signing of this agreement elevates the long-standing friendship and strategic partnership between Bangladesh and Japan to a new level. According to sources from the Armed Forces Division, the agreement is the outcome of sustained and close engagements between the two sides since 2023, reflecting deep mutual trust, shared strategic vision, and enhanced cooperation.
The sources further noted that this landmark agreement is a result of the interim government’s forward-looking and effective diplomatic efforts. It is expected to significantly accelerate Bangladesh’s defense modernization process by facilitating access to advanced defense equipment and technologies.
The agreement has been concluded in full conformity with the principles of the United Nations Charter, contributing to the promotion of international peace and security. It establishes an institutional framework for the acquisition of advanced defense equipment and technology, as well as for joint research and development initiatives, thereby strengthening Bangladesh’s capacity to safeguard its independence and sovereignty.
In addition, this agreement is expected to increase the exchange of military experts between Bangladesh and Japan, which will play an important role in developing defense capabilities and implementing future action plans.
