Algeria’s National Martyrs’ Day Observed in Dhaka

On Tuesday (February 18, 2025), Algeria’s National Martyrs’ Day was observed in Dhaka to commemorate the martyrs and to pay tribute and express gratitude for the great sacrifices made by these heroes during the colonial period.

The Algerian Ambassador to Dhaka, Dr Abdelouaheb Saidani, remembered the supreme sacrifices of 5.6 million brave Algerian men and women who selflessly laid down their lives to protect their homeland.

Since 1990, Algeria has been observing February 18 as a day to remember the martyrs and to honor the great sacrifices made during the colonial period, where 150,000 martyrs gave their lives.

In his written speech, Ambassador Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani stated, “Since 1990, marking the establishment of the Special Organization (OS), which was founded on February 1947, as the armed wing of Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties (MTLD), former Algerian political party. The OS played pivotal role in triggering the Glorious Revolution that took place on November 1, 1954.”

This year’s inspiring slogan, “The martyr, an immortal soul and a pioneering path of loyalty”, finds all its relevance, as highlighted in the Holy Quran, Surat Al Imran, verse 169:”Never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.”

The Ambassador further emphasized, “Such commemorations provide invaluable opportunity for the younger generation to draw inspiration from the immense sacrifices made by our martyrs. They are called upon to carry forward the torch in the ongoing battle for the development and modernization of a new Algeria. By actively participating in these commendable efforts we honor the sacrifices of our courageous Martyrs, ensuring that their legacy not only endures but also inspires hope for a prosperous and strong Algeria.”

Notably, Algeria’s National Martyrs’ Day is observed with due reverence at Algerian embassies worldwide, where the sacrifices of the martyrs are remembered, and emphasis is placed on fostering patriotism and the spirit of independence among future generations.
