The Embassy of Algeria in Bangladesh hosted a solemn ceremony to commemorate the 64th anniversary of the massacres of 17 October 1961, under the theme “Cohesion and Commitment.” This date has been recognized as National Emigration Day in Algeria since 2021, honoring the courage and sacrifice of Algerians who stood against colonial oppression.

The ceremony began with the hoisting of the Algerian national flag, followed by a minute of silence to honor the martyrs of the massacre. Ambassador Abdelouahab SAIDANI delivered a powerful keynote address, reflecting on the historic significance of the 17 October 1961 events. He shared the story of how over thirty thousand Algerians, including men, women, and children, peacefully took to the streets of Paris to protest a discriminatory curfew imposed on Muslims in France and to demand independence for Algeria. Their march, which carried no weapons but only dreams of justice, was met with brutal force by the French police, resulting in numerous deaths and many being thrown into the River Seine.

“This massacre is one of the most brutal acts of French colonial repression,” said Ambassador Saidani. “The state met peace with violence, humanity with hatred. Yet, the courage of the Algerian people did not perish that night. Instead, it lit the path to Algeria’s independence.”
The Ambassador highlighted how this tragedy, though cloaked in silence for decades, became a beacon of resistance and unity, ultimately contributing to Algeria’s independence. He reflected on the shared struggles of Algeria and Bangladesh, both nations having fought against colonial oppression and the pursuit of freedom.

“The people of Algeria and Bangladesh both rose against oppression, guided by a faith in justice and the dignity of every human life,” he said, emphasizing the deep bond of solidarity between the two nations.
As part of the commemoration, a documentary film was presented to the attendees, depicting the events of the massacre and the unwavering resilience of the Algerian people. The film served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in the fight for justice and freedom.
In his closing remarks, Ambassador Saidani called for continued cooperation and solidarity between Algeria and Bangladesh, expressing hope for a future grounded in justice, peace, and shared prosperity.

“Let us stand together so that the tragedies of the past never return, and let the lessons they left behind guide us toward a world rooted in justice and peace,” he concluded, paying tribute to the fallen martyrs and reinforcing the strong bond of friendship between the two nations.
The Embassy of Algeria in Bangladesh remains committed to preserving the memory of this significant historical event and continues to honor those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for justice and dignity.
