Government policy support needed to curb rising costs in garment sector: Vidya Amrit Khan

Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Vice President Vidya Amrit Khan said that rising production costs and policy complexity have become major challenges for Bangladesh’s readymade garment industry. Government policy support is essential to address these.

She was speaking at a discussion titled “Rising Costs in Textile and Garment Sector – Challenges and Ways to Overcome” jointly organized by Textile Focus and Eurofins Assurance. In this discussion, stakeholders in the sector exchanged views on sustainable and practical solutions to address the rising costs of doing business in the readymade garment sector.

In her speech, Vidya Amrit Khan mentioned that to survive in global competition, coordinated efforts of the government and the private sector are required. He highlighted some of the ongoing initiatives of BGMEA, including reducing service charges for members by up to 25%, working with the government to simplify the tax structure, and taking steps to address challenges in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He expressed hope that with the right policy support and concerted efforts, Bangladesh’s garment sector will be able to achieve sustainable growth while maintaining its competitive position.
