US tariff reduction a big relief for Bangladesh’s garment sector: BGMEA President

On Saturday (August 02, 2025), the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) organized a press conference regarding the reduction of tariffs on Bangladeshi garment products in the US market. The conference, organized at the BGMEA building, was presided over by the organization’s President Mahmud Hasan Khan.

Also present at the press conference were BGMEA Senior Vice President Enamul Haque Khan (Bablu), Vice President Md. Rezwan Selim, Vice President (Finance) Mizanur Rahman, Vice President Md. Shihab Uddoza Chowdhury, Directors Shah Raeed Chowdhury, Mohammad Abdur Rahim, Faisal Samad, Md. Hasib Uddin, Mohammad Abdus Salam, Nafis-ud-Daula, Majumder Arifur Rahman, Joarder Mohammad Hosne Qamar Alam, Asef Kamal Pasha, Rumana Rashid and Samiha Azim.

At the press conference, the BGMEA president said that the US government has recently reduced the additional duty on garment products imported from Bangladesh from 35 percent to 20 percent. He described this decision as “a big relief news” for the country’s ready-made garment industry.

He said, “This achievement has been possible due to the relentless efforts of the interim government. This success has come as a result of the sincerity and strategic discussions of the relevant team, especially the Trade and Security Advisor. We express our deep gratitude to them.”

However, warning that there is no room for complacency in this achievement, he said, “To survive in the current global competition, the policy support of the government along with the industry needs to be stronger.”

He expressed hope that this tariff reduction can open the door to new possibilities through the joint efforts of all parties – industrialists, government, labor organizations and civil society. He commented that ensuring desired quality, timely delivery and worker welfare are equally important to sustain the growth of garment exports.
