Morocco’s Throne Day celebrated in Dhaka

The Moroccan Embassy celebrated Morocco’s national day, Throne Day, at the Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka on Wednesday (July 30, 2025). The day is celebrated every year across the country as the anniversary of the accession to the throne of the current King of Morocco, Mohammed VI. Since his accession to the throne in 1999, this day has become a symbol of national unity, pride and development for the Moroccan people.

Throne Day is not only a formal day in Morocco but also a special occasion for the Moroccan people to pay tribute and gratitude to their King. Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI for the past 26 years, Morocco has achieved unprecedented development in the socio-economic sectors, including infrastructure, renewable energy, diplomacy and sports. The country’s modern highways, high-speed railways (LGV), world-class port ‘Tangger Med’, and investments in renewable energy have established Morocco as a developing model in Africa today.

Mr. Mostafa Sarwar Farooqui, Honorable Advisor, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, was present as the chief guest at the event. In his speech, he thanked the Moroccan Embassy and said, “This day is a symbol of Morocco’s strength, vision and development. Bangladesh and Morocco have warm and historic ties, which are based on mutual respect and cultural heritage. I believe that cultural exchanges between us will further strengthen this bond.”

Mr. Bouchaib EZ-Zahri, Chargé d’Affaires of the Moroccan Embassy, expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to the guests present at the event. He said, “Your gracious and dignified presence at this joyous event has deeply moved us. Throne Day holds a special place in the hearts of the Moroccan people. It is not only a national festival, but also a symbol of national unity, a moment of introspection and an expression of pride.”

He said that the reign of His Majesty King Mohammed VI has been marked by bold reforms, modernization and human values. This leadership has established Morocco as a reliable and trustworthy partner on the global stage. In this vein, next year will mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Bangladesh, which is a testament to the historical ties and mutual respect between the two countries.

He also said that our partnership has recently reached new heights. An agreement signed earlier this month between Morocco’s OCP Group and the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) has secured the supply of 1.1 million tonnes of non-urea fertiliser for the period 2025-2026. This is not just a commercial agreement, but a long-term strategic partnership that will achieve the goals of sustainable agriculture, food security and technological innovation. It also includes training, technology transfer and research cooperation.

In 2023, Bangladesh imported phosphate and chemical fertilisers worth US$407 million from Morocco, which is about 75 per cent of the country’s total fertiliser imports. Bangladesh’s imports from Morocco have grown at an average annual rate of 29 per cent in the last five years, which reflects the strength and dynamism of economic relations.

He also noted that the partnership between the two countries has expanded beyond the agricultural sector to include infrastructure, education, transport, civil aviation and culture. During his recent visit to Morocco, he held constructive discussions with the Honorable Youth and Sports Advisor of Bangladesh, Mr. Asif Mahmud Sajib, and the Industry, Housing and Public Works Advisor, Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan.

He specifically mentioned the education sector as an important pillar of the relations between the two countries. Every year, Bangladeshi students get the opportunity to study in various universities in Morocco on scholarships. He expressed hope that the scope of academic exchange, research cooperation and skill development will be further expanded in the future.

The cultural bond between the people of the two countries is also gradually strengthening. Bangladesh’s active participation in the OIC Youth Summit in Marrakesh and the upcoming Global Youth Summit in Dhaka will further deepen that relationship. He recalled that in 2017, Morocco provided emergency humanitarian assistance to Bangladesh on the instructions of His Majesty the King during the Rohingya crisis, which is a sign of sympathy and friendship between the two countries.

Finally, he extended his best wishes and congratulations to King Mohammed VI of Morocco (may God bless him) for his long life, good health and a happy life. He said, “May our celebration bring glory to Morocco, joy to Bangladesh and a message of a bright joint future for both countries. Long live the Morocco-Bangladesh friendship.”

Government officials, diplomats from different countries, businessmen, cultural figures, media representatives and dignitaries were present at the event.
