BGMEA and Workers’ Federations Hold Dialogue to Ensure Peaceful Coexistence and Workers’ Welfare in the RMG Sector

As part of its ongoing efforts to ensure law and order and maintain a stable industrial environment in the ready-made garment sector, BGMEA continues to engage in regular dialogue with worker federations. In line with this efforts, a meeting was held with representatives from labour federations on July 10 at the BGMEA office in Uttara.

The meeting was chaired by BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan and attended by Vice President Md. Rezwan Selim, Director Asef Kamal Pasha, and Director Sheikh Hossain Mohammad Mostafiz.

During the discussion, the BGMEA leadership emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with worker federations to uphold industrial peace and labour discipline across the sector. BGMEA urged federation leaders to play a proactive role in discouraging unlawful demands, vandalism or road blockades, and promoting constructive dialogue in resolving workplace issues.

Such actions not only harm the industry but also create suffering for the general public.

In response, the labour representatives reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful labour environment, stressing that labour unrest serves no one’s interests. They emphasized the importance of resolving factory-level grievances through mutual dialogue and internal mechanisms.

The labour leaders also welcomed BGMEA’s recent initiative to establish regional grievance redressal cells in key industrial zones including Gazipur, Ashulia, Savar, Mirpur, and Narayanganj, which aim to address workers’ concerns in a timely and structured manner.

Highlighting the Board’s broader commitment to worker welfare, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan shared plans to establish dedicated hospitals in these industrial hubs to ensure better healthcare access for workers.

He informed attendees that the association has already requested land allocation from the relevant government authorities, and construction will commence immediately upon approval.

In addition, the President announced that initiatives for a food rationing system is underway to support garment workers’ well-being and improve living standards.

He invited labour federations to submit concrete proposals to help shape the initiative. The federations expressed strong support for the program.

The meeting also underscored the need for a comprehensive worker database, which the BGMEA views as essential for the implementation of structured welfare schemes such as rationing cards.

The President sought active cooperation from all stakeholders in developing and maintaining this database.

Both sides expressed commitment to working together in a spirit of partnership to foster peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and progress in the RMG industry.
