Home Affairs Adviser calls for more US cooperation in Bangladesh’s security sector

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) has called for more US cooperation in Bangladesh’s security sector.

He made this call during a courtesy call on the Advisor by Megan Bouldin, the US Charge d’Affaires in Bangladesh, at her office in the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday (July 10, 2025) afternoon.

The meeting discussed various issues of mutual interest, including law and order and security issues between the two countries, counter-terrorism, prosecution of cases, prevention of online sexual harassment of young women.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Advisor welcomed the Ambassador and said that the United States is a close ally of Bangladesh. The country has been working as a close partner in counter-terrorism and security in Bangladesh since the beginning. With the training and equipment support of the United States, it has been possible to modernize and make the CTTC (Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime) Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police modern and capable. For this, the Advisor sincerely thanked the Charge d’Affaires and requested to continue cooperation in this sector in the future.

Expressing his commitment to cooperation in the security sector of Bangladesh, the Charge d’Affaires said that every country is more or less Terrorism and militant attacks are at risk. Bangladesh is no exception. Although many political torture and oppression incidents during the previous Awami League government were termed as militancy to divert attention to other sectors. Still, Bangladesh should be vigilant in this regard.

In response, the advisor said that there is currently no militancy in Bangladesh. However, occasionally banned political parties try to hold meetings and processions – which the law enforcement agencies are strictly preventing. He said that the law enforcement agencies are on the highest alert to deal with not only terrorism but any kind of crime and they have been given necessary instructions accordingly. He said that special security measures have been taken for the Baridhara Diplomatic Area in Dhaka. Along with the regular security forces, the Coast Guard has been deployed there.

Thanking the advisor for taking special measures for the security of the US Embassy, the Charge d’Affaires said that mutual communication, coordination and information sharing between the relevant agencies is very important to ensure the security and safety of any country. The regular police force of Bangladesh, intelligence agencies (NSI, SB), CTTC (Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime), ATU (Anti Terrorism Unit) etc. should also be interconnected and share information. Only then will Bangladesh’s security system be stronger and more integrated.

Khandaker Md. Mahabubur Rahman, Additional Secretary (Political and ICT) of the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Political and Economic Counselor of the US Embassy, Eric Geelan, Political Military Affairs Officer Josh Pope, among others, were present in the meeting.
