US announces 35 percent tariff on exports from 14 countries, including Bangladesh, likely to take effect from August 1

US President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of 35 percent tariff on products from 14 countries including Bangladesh exported to the United States. However, the deadline for implementing the increased tariff has been slightly postponed. Trump said that if there is no agreement on the US trade balance with the mentioned countries, the new tariff will be effective from August 1, 2025.

Along with Bangladesh, the list of new tariff impositions includes a total of 14 countries including Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and Turkey. To this end, President Trump also sent a letter to the heads of government of these countries on Monday (July 7).

It is worth noting that in April this year, the US government imposed a 37 percent tariff on Bangladeshi ready-made garments and other products exported to the United States. At that time, the chief advisor to the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, wrote a letter to President Trump, asking for time before the tariff took effect. In view of that, the United States gave three months.

However, at the last moment of this period, Trump extended the deadline for the implementation of the increased tariffs by another month, postponing it until August 1. Along with this, the new letter once again makes it clear that if no specific steps are taken to reduce the trade deficit with the United States within this period, then the exporting countries’ products will have to pay increased tariffs when they enter the United States.
