Godfathers behind the eradication of drugs must be caught first – Home Affairs Advisor

Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) said, the godfathers behind the eradication of drugs must be caught first. Only then will the government’s program to control drugs be successful. There is no point in catching only drug carriers.

The advisor said these things while briefing journalists after distributing checks of financial donations among representatives of 32 private drug addiction treatment centers on the occasion of the celebration of “International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, 2025” at the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday (June 25, 2025).

The advisor said, we have two big enemies. Number one is corruption and the other is drugs. Drugs are now everywhere in society and among all classes of people. Awareness is the first thing needed to protect the country and the nation from drugs. It is not possible to overcome it through drug treatment centers alone. He said that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and law enforcement agencies should be more proactive in preventing drugs from entering the country from outside. If any member of the law enforcement agencies is involved in drug trafficking, strict action will be taken against him. He also said that the cost of treating drug addiction is very high now. It is very difficult for the poor to bear it. He expressed hope that no one should be admitted to a drug addiction treatment center due to drug addiction during this time.

Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said that the government has made all-out efforts to gradually reduce the number of drug addicts. In the last ECNEC meeting, the project “Construction of seven divisional drug addiction treatment centers” in seven divisional cities at a cost of Tk 1400 crore was approved. He said that drugs must be eradicated from our society by any means.

During the briefing, Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor on Home Affairs Md. Khoda Bakhas Chowdhury, Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Nasimul Gani, Director General of the Narcotics Control Department Md. Hasan Maruf and others were present.

Before the press briefing, the advisor distributed donation checks of Tk 57 lakh 89 thousand 500 among 32 drug addiction treatment centers in Dhaka Division including Dhaka Metro Area.
