Today is Friday, historic March 7. A unique day in the independence struggle and liberation war of the Bengali nation. On this day in 1971, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, standing in front of a huge crowd at the then Race Course Maidan (present-day Suhrawardy Udyan), Bangabandhu declared in front of millions of freedom-loving people—
“As I have given blood, I will give more blood, I will free the people of this country, God willing. This time’s struggle is our struggle for freedom, this time’s struggle is our struggle for independence.”
Bangabandhu’s March 7 speech is recognized as an important document not only in the history of Bangladesh, but also in world history. On October 30, 2017, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized this speech as a world heritage site. It has been translated into various languages of the world.
