Promoting Innovation in Agriculture: Enhancing Small-Scale Organic Farming in El Salvador

The JICA El Salvador office, in collaboration with the CREVAS team, proudly participated in the achievement presentation of the groundbreaking initiative, “Implementation of Agrometeorological Monitoring Systems with ARDUINO for Small-Scale Organic Farming.” This innovative project is spearheaded by Mr. Elvis Martinez, who studied “Methods for Promoting Small-Scale Organic Farming” in Japan in 2012.

Drawing on the expertise he acquired in Japan, Mr. Martinez has been tirelessly working to train young people in El Salvador on organic farming techniques. His efforts focus on integrating advanced tools like ARDUINO—a versatile microcomputer equipped with essential electronic components and input/output devices—into agricultural practices. This integration helps improve the production quality of organic vegetables and enhances their resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Through this initiative, farmers and young agricultural enthusiasts are gaining practical knowledge on using software and hardware solutions to monitor and manage crops effectively. Such technology-driven approaches are not only boosting productivity but also fostering a generation of eco-conscious farmers who prioritize sustainable agriculture.

The CREVAS project, which aims to support the value chain of agro-industrial crops and empower farmers, plays a vital role in this endeavor. The collaboration between JICA, CREVAS, and Mr. Martinez serves as a beacon of innovation, inspiring a brighter and more sustainable future for agriculture in El Salvador.

JICA El Salvador extends heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Elvis Martinez for his dedicated efforts in inspiring and empowering the next generation of farmers to embrace innovation and resilience in organic farming.
