Barrister Jarhat Adib Chowdhury, a Member of the Bangladesh National Parliament and Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
She was elected to the Executive Committee by a majority vote representing the Asia-Pacific geopolitical group during the 153rd IPU Assembly held in Arusha, Tanzania. Representatives from 37 member countries of the Asia-Pacific group participated in this election.
This election is considered a significant achievement for Bangladesh in the international parliamentary arena. Following Bangladesh’s election to the presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly during the tenure of the current government, this representation on the IPU Executive Committee marks another notable addition to the country’s parliamentary engagement at the international level.
Stakeholders believe that Barrister Jarhat Adib Chowdhury’s election to the IPU Executive Committee will create opportunities to further strengthen Bangladesh’s parliamentary diplomacy and its participation in international parliamentary cooperation. At the same time, this role will play a crucial part in projecting Bangladesh’s position and views within the global parliamentary sphere.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union is the international organization of national parliaments worldwide. The organization works to strengthen democratic governance, peace, sustainable development, parliamentary diplomacy, and mutual cooperation.
Meanwhile, a parliamentary delegation from Bangladesh, led by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram), is currently participating in the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania.
