The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) has emphasized innovation, investment, cybersecurity, digital economy and efficient and effective governance to further strengthen Bangladesh’s digital future.
The call was made at a policy dialogue titled ‘Accelerating Bangladesh’s Digital Future: Policy Priorities for Innovation, Investment & ICT-Led Growth’ organized by AmCham at The Westin Dhaka in the capital on Sunday (August 9). Prime Minister’s Advisor on Posts, Telecommunications, ICT, Science and Technology Rehan Asif Asad was present as the chief guest at the event.
At the event, AmCham President Syed Mohammad Kamal emphasized on ensuring policy transparency and a business-friendly environment for the development of the digital sector. He called for more clarity on the digital permanent establishment (PE) provisions, reconsideration of the increased turnover tax on ISPs, and facilitation of international payments for technology companies and startups.
He said that more active involvement of foreign investors in the policy-making process would create a more competitive, transparent, and investment-friendly business environment in Bangladesh.
In his speech as the chief guest, Rehan Asif Asad outlined the government’s five priorities in the ICT and telecommunications sector. These include consistent policies under a five-year tax framework, improved and uninterrupted connectivity, building digital public infrastructure under the concept of ‘One Citizen, One ID, One Digital Wallet’, creating an artificial intelligence (AI)-capable skilled workforce, and expanding electronics manufacturing in the country.
According to the organizers, these initiatives can play a significant role in expanding Bangladesh’s digital economy, increasing technology-based investments, and building a strong technology infrastructure for future generations.
AmCham ICT Subcommittee Chair Rubaba Daula moderated the policy dialogue, which was attended by AmCham ICT leaders and officials from the US Embassy in Dhaka. The discussion covered the potential of Bangladesh’s technology sector, policy challenges, investment climate, cybersecurity, and various aspects of ICT-driven growth.
Ala Uddin Ahmed, AmCham Vice President and CEO of MetLife Bangladesh, delivered the vote of thanks at the end of the event. The policy dialogue was supported by Cisco.
