Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is one of the largest development partners of Bangladesh. JICA’s contribution in the country’s infrastructure development, local government system, safe water supply and various public service sectors is very important. He expressed hope that the cooperative relationship between Bangladesh and JICA will be further strengthened in the future.
The minister said these things during a courtesy call on JICA President Dr. Tanaka Akihiko at the Secretariat on Sunday (July 5, 2026).
The meeting discussed in detail the ongoing projects and future development plans of Bangladesh and JICA. Both sides exchanged views on various issues, especially waste management, water management, capacity building of the local government sector and sustainable urban development.
The Minister for Local Government said that Bangladesh is moving forward on the path of rapid development under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The government is working sincerely for the speedy implementation of development projects and all concerned are fulfilling their responsibilities in a coordinated manner to advance the overall development activities of the country under the leadership of the Prime Minister.
He also said that the government is working closely with international development partners to make the local government system modern, effective and people-friendly. In this regard, JICA’s experience, technical assistance and investment will play an important role in the sustainable development of Bangladesh.
During the meeting, Secretary of the Local Government Department Md. Shahidul Hasan, Director General of the Monitoring, Evaluation and Inspection Division Md. Mahmudul Hasan ndc and senior officials of the ministry were present.
