DU VC returns home after China visit, signs agreement with Yunnan University on joint undergraduate program in Bengali

Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam has returned home from China after a five-day official visit. During the visit, an important cooperation agreement was signed with Yunnan University in China to run a joint undergraduate program in Bengali.

Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam and Yunnan University President Professor Ma Wenhui signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions at a ceremony held at Yunnan University on Friday (June 26, 2026).

According to the agreement, Dhaka University will provide academic support to the undergraduate students of the Bangla Department of the School of Foreign Languages ​​of Yunnan University to improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Bengali. In addition, the two universities will work jointly in teaching, training and implementing the curriculum in the undergraduate level of Bengali.

In addition, the first semester students of the third year of Yunnan University will have the opportunity to study at the Institute of Modern Languages, Dhaka University for one semester. The institutional evaluation and examination of these students will be conducted by Dhaka University and the university will award certificates of completion to those who successfully complete the course.

During the visit, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam participated in the international ‘Chinese Bridge’ program organized by Yunnan University and delivered a speech at the inaugural ceremony.

In his speech, he said, “The relationship between Bangladesh and China has been built on the basis of centuries of cultural and economic exchanges, which are founded on mutual respect and a common vision for the future. In this rapidly changing world, education serves as the most important bridge between the people of the two countries. Education is not only a means of exchanging knowledge, but also one of the foundations for increasing mutual understanding, building lasting friendships and creating a new generation that believes in international cooperation. The ‘Chinese Bridge’ program is playing an important role in realizing this goal.”

He further said that such educational and cultural exchange programs will further deepen and sustain the relations between the people of Bangladesh and China.

During the visit, the Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University participated in several bilateral and multilateral meetings with high-level officials of Yunnan University. Discussions were held in these meetings on the ongoing education, research, teacher-student exchange and further expansion and strengthening of future academic cooperation between the two universities.

This visit is being considered as an important milestone in strengthening Bangladesh-China education cooperation, besides taking the academic partnership between Dhaka University and Yunnan University to new heights.
