ICRC delegation meets Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed was met by Nicolas Fleury, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Bangladesh delegation, in his office at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (May 24, 2026).

During the meeting, various issues of mutual interest including ensuring health and medical facilities for prisoners, modernizing the jail code, first aid and human rights training to enhance police capacity, and the Rohingya crisis were discussed.

The Home Minister welcomed the head of the ICRC Bangladesh delegation. The head of the ICRC delegation expressed his sincere congratulations and best wishes to the minister on assuming the new portfolio.

The head of the ICRC Bangladesh delegation said that they have sent necessary recommendations to modernize the existing jail code of Bangladesh. In addition, a proposal has been sent to the Ministry of Health to increase health facilities inside the prisons. At this time, the minister said that prisoners in prisons are sent to the relevant specialist hospitals for better treatment if necessary. In addition, primary medical care is being ensured through the internal medical unit of the prison.

Appreciating the various training proposals of the ICRC to enhance the efficiency of the police and prisons, the minister said that such arrangements will be helpful in increasing professionalism. Nicholas Floury said that they are interested in organizing first aid and human rights for the police and higher training for senior officers of the police and prisons. The minister assured all-round cooperation in this regard and requested the ICRC to send skilled trainers of international standards.

Thanking the ICRC for providing humanitarian and medical services to the Rohingyas, the minister said that the Bangladesh government always wants to keep the Rohingya crisis in the eyes of the international community. He sought the ICRC’s continuous cooperation in this regard.

The minister assured the ICRC chief that the Bangladesh government always respects International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and is committed to providing all kinds of administrative and policy cooperation to the ICRC’s humanitarian work. He also expressed gratitude for the ongoing technical and training assistance of the ICRC in the implementation of the Geneva Convention and international humanitarian law.

Additional Secretary of the Political Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed, Joint Secretary of the Political-1 Branch Rebecca Khan and Deputy Secretary of the Political-1 Branch Begum Minara Nazmin were present during the meeting.
