Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir held separate meetings with International Labour Organization Bangladesh Country Director Max Tunon and a delegation from China State Construction Engineering Corporation at the Secretariat on Tuesday (May 19, 2026). The meetings discussed expanding development cooperation in various sectors including labor welfare, urban management and infrastructure development.
In the meeting with the ILO Country Director, important discussions were held on improving the living standards of city corporation cleaners, enhancing their skills, creating employment and modern waste management. At this time, the minister said that the ILO can play an important role in ensuring the welfare and safe working environment of the country’s working people.
He also said that international partnerships need to be further strengthened in employment creation, trade, industrialization, addressing the effects of climate change and building the capacity of local government institutions. He also emphasized the need for increased coordination between government and private organizations to ensure sustainable development.
In a meeting with a delegation from China State Construction Engineering Corporation, various aspects of increasing cooperation in the infrastructure and urban development sectors in Bangladesh were discussed. In particular, the possibility of joint initiatives in safe water supply, modern sewage systems, construction sector and urban infrastructure development was given importance.
During the meeting, Director General of the Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Inspection Division of the Local Government Department Md. Mahmudul Hasan, Additional Secretary of the Development Division Dr. Abu Nasr Mohammad Abdullah, along with senior officials of the ministry and heads of subordinate departments were present.
