Singapore wants to increase more investment and trade in Bangladesh

Diplomatic Desk:

Singapore wants to increase trade and investment in Bangladesh. Singapore’s Non-Resident High Commissioner Derek Loh expressed this interest during a meeting with Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir at the Secretariat on Tuesday (May 19, 2026).

The meeting discussed in detail the reduction of bilateral trade deficit, increasing Singapore’s investment in Bangladesh, cooperation in the renewable energy sector, agricultural exports, food security and the potential for environmentally friendly industries.

The Commerce Minister said that Bangladesh is interested in further strengthening trade and investment relations with Singapore. He said that Bangladesh has now become a potential destination for foreign investment through an investment-friendly environment, developed infrastructure, skilled manpower and export-oriented industries.

The Minister also said that there is ample scope for increasing cooperation between the two countries in the sectors of agriculture, food processing, renewable energy, logistics, port infrastructure and environmentally friendly industries. The government is working to attract foreign investment in these sectors and diversify exports.

The High Commissioner said that Singapore is interested in doing more business and investment in Bangladesh. He especially mentioned the Bay Terminal project as an important and exemplary initiative. He said that this investment of about 800 million to 1 billion US dollars will play an important role in developing Bangladesh’s trade infrastructure and will be helpful in attracting more foreign investment in the future.

The High Commissioner also said that from the perspective of food security, Singapore is interested in importing agricultural products from Bangladesh. Singapore imports fresh products from various countries including Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Europe and Japan. Considering that, Bangladesh can be a potential source of agricultural products for Singapore. He also mentioned that it is possible to reduce the trade deficit between the two countries through this.

Senior officials of the ministry including Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Ayesha Akhter were present in the meeting.
