On Tuesday (May 19, 2026), Chief Whip of the Bangladesh National Parliament Md. Nurul Islam paid a courtesy call on a US delegation in Bangladesh at his office.

The Chief Whip was met by Deputy Chief of Mission in Bangladesh Megan Baldin, Political Advisor Eric Gillan, and Political Expert Firoz Ahmed.

During the meeting, they discussed various issues including parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh, development of democracy, resumption of democracy in Bangladesh, development of economic relations, trade relations, parliamentary sessions and parliament building.

Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam said, the United States has always been by our side in our democratic journey. Bangladesh has excellent trade relations with the United States. The United States is a major market for our ready-made garment industry sector. I hope that the technologically advanced United States will support us in the goal set by the Bangladesh government to create digital IT jobs.

Regarding the steps taken by the current government for economic development, he said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is making every effort to stabilize the country’s economy. He has undertaken various programs including family cards, farmer cards and agricultural loan waivers to improve the fate of the marginalized people. To implement these, it is essential that the journey of democracy is smooth. Without democracy, development is not possible in any field.

Md. Nurul Islam said that the parliament is the heart of democracy. The people always remember the architect of this building, Louis I. Kahn, with respect.

Megan Baldin said that it is a strong symbol of the long-standing friendship between the two countries. American architecture students often wish to see this building, as it is known as one of Louis Kahn’s best works. The United States always believes in the independence, democracy and sovereignty of every state.

In addition, the delegation praised the labor law reform of Bangladesh and was informed that it is being viewed very positively in Washington. The bilateral agreement includes important conditions such as combating corruption, protecting the environment and preventing wildlife trafficking. The health sector also mentioned $90 million in aid over 5 years to combat infectious diseases.

Democracy and Future Relations Discussions emphasized that Bangladesh is a friendly democratic country and its economic reforms will further encourage American companies to invest. This relationship between the two countries will not be limited to documents. The relationship between the United States and Bangladesh will reach greater heights and be sustainable.

Senior officials of the National Parliament Secretariat were present during the meeting.
