An important meeting was held between the Honorable Opposition Leader of the National Assembly and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, MP, and Chairman of Japan’s prominent humanitarian and development organization Nippon Foundation Yohei Sasakawa.
In this meeting held today (7 May 2026), Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was present along with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Central Executive Council Member Saiful Alam Khan Milon, MP, and Foreign Affairs Advisor to the Opposition Leader Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman, MP.
The meeting was held in a very sincere and cordial atmosphere. In it, detailed discussions were held on bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Japan, humanitarian cooperation, development in the education and health sectors, skill development of the youth and sustainable social development.
In addition, the two sides also exchanged views on the humanitarian aspects of the Rohingya crisis, regional stability and the democratic progress of Bangladesh.
During the meeting, the opposition leader expressed gratitude to the Japanese government and the Nippon Foundation for standing by the people of Bangladesh and for their continued support in various development and humanitarian activities. He called for the Nippon Foundation to play a more active role in the rehabilitation of the families of the martyrs of the July Movement and the treatment and rehabilitation of the injured.
On the other hand, Nippon Foundation Chairman Yohei Sasakawa expressed hope for continued cooperation in human resource development, social progress and humanitarian assistance activities in Bangladesh in the future.
