State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku said that canal and river excavation and restoration activities have already started across the country as per the government’s election promise and are being implemented in phases.
The State Minister said this while inaugurating the re-excavation of Dhaleshwari and Louhajang rivers and river bank protection activities in Tangail Municipality area in Khudirampur area of Kortia Union of Tangail Sadar Upazila on Saturday (May 2, 2026).
The State Minister said that the country’s rivers, canals and dykes play an important role in maintaining the balance of our environment. But unfortunately, many rivers are in existential crisis today due to filling and pollution. He mentioned that the current condition of other rivers, including the traditional rivers of Tangail, is worrying. He said that if the water flow in the river is normal, farming will be easier and fish resources will also increase, which will help improve the quality of life of the local people. He also said that in addition to the river re-drainage, river bank conservation, construction of walking paths and implementation of tree plantation programs will be implemented.
The State Minister also said that strict measures will be taken to ensure that industrial waste does not fall into the river. He also said that a monitoring committee will be formed to implement the river re-drainage program properly. He said that the navigability of the river will be restored through re-drainage of the river and if someone is illegally occupying the river, they will be evicted by the administration. Necessary instructions have been given to the concerned administration in this regard.
In response to a question about the supply of cattle for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, the minister said that there is a sufficient number of cattle in the country and local farmers are capable of meeting the country’s needs. He said that a formal briefing will be held by the ministry tomorrow.
The inauguration ceremony, chaired by Tangail Water Development Board Executive Engineer Main Uddin, was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Mahanta, Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Shahin Mia, Additional Superintendent of Police Abedul Islam, District BNP President Hasanuzzammil Shahin, along with administration officials and party leaders and activists.
