BIMSTEC Secretary General highlights importance of regional cooperation for sustainable development

Indra Mani Pandey, Secretary General of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), addressed the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in Bangkok, Thailand.

Participating in the general debate of the session on “Opportunities and Solutions for a Sustainable Future” on Monday (April 20, 2026), he said that the importance of regional organizations is increasing in the current global context. He noted that BIMSTEC’s broad program is fully consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2030.

In his speech, the Secretary General outlined the vision, goals and priorities of BIMSTEC. He said that sustainable development can be achieved by strengthening cooperation among member countries, and regional organizations can play an important role in this regard.

He further emphasized that it is necessary to take coordinated initiatives to address challenges such as climate change, economic development and social inclusion.

It is worth noting that the UNESCAP session is an important platform for countries in the Asia-Pacific region, where policymakers exchange views on sustainable development and regional cooperation.
