High-level meeting held to strengthen Bangladesh-Ethiopia bilateral relations

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman met with President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Taye Atsekselassie Made, at his office on Tuesday (April 21, 2026). Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir was present at the meeting.

The meeting discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Ethiopia. Emphasis was placed on trade, investment, education, agriculture and cultural exchanges.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Ethiopian President congratulated Bangladesh for the successful organization of the general elections held in February 2026 and expressed his best wishes to the newly elected government. He congratulated the Prime Minister on her landslide victory in the recent elections. At the same time, he highly appreciated Bangladesh’s contribution to UN peacekeeping operations in various regions of the world, including Africa.

Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman highlighted the potential for cooperation in ready-made garments, pharmaceuticals and jute products, emphasizing on strengthening economic cooperation. He requested the President to establish an Ethiopian embassy in Dhaka.

In response, President Tayyip Atsekselassie Made welcomed Bangladeshi investments in Ethiopia, especially in the ready-made garments and pharmaceuticals sectors. He emphasized the need for closer communication and cooperation at the business level between the business circles of the two countries, which he said would help in increasing trade and investment.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the existing cooperation in various international forums, including the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Group of 77 and South-South Cooperation. They also reiterated their commitment to further strengthen mutual cooperation in multilateral areas.

At the end of the meeting, the Foreign Minister invited the Ethiopian President to visit Bangladesh at a convenient time.
