Bangladesh seeks EU assistance in migration, security and justice

European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller met with Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at his office in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday (April 13, 2026).

During the meeting, both sides discussed in detail various important issues related to police reform, security sector cooperation, migration management, independence of the judiciary, anti-corruption strategy, trade cooperation and mutual interests.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Minister welcomed the Ambassador. Ambassador Michael Miller sincerely congratulated the Minister on assuming the responsibility in the new portfolio. He said, the European Union is a tested and reliable development partner of Bangladesh. During the tenure of the current government, we want to further strengthen and expand the existing cooperation between the two sides.

During the discussion on police reform, the Minister said, Bangladesh is planning to form a Police Commission. In this regard, the European Union can assist us by providing necessary advisory services. He also said that the EU has expressed interest in assisting Bangladesh in restructuring and modernizing the police through police training, capacity building and exchange of experience.

Regarding the independence of the judiciary, the Ambassador said that Bangladesh can utilize the long-standing experience of the European Union countries in the field of independence of the judiciary. In this context, Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said that the current government is determined to ensure the full independence of the judiciary.

Stressing the role of the EU in combating corruption, the Ambassador said that Bangladesh needs to have a specific and strong anti-corruption strategy and the EU is ready to provide all kinds of technical and strategic assistance in this regard.

The Minister agreed with the Ambassador’s proposal. He instructed the relevant officials of the Ministry to quickly identify specific areas of cooperation with the EU in various sectors and maintain regular communication on these issues.

Additional Secretary of the Political Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed, Joint Secretary of the Political-1 Branch Rebecca Khan and members of the European Union delegation were present at the time.
