Constitution to be amended according to public expectations and aspirations of student-mass uprising: Home Minister

Desk Report:

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that public expectations and the aspirations of the martyrs of the student-mass uprising will be given top priority in amending the constitution. All amendment processes will be completed through an agreement, especially on the basis of the ‘July National Charter’ signed between political parties.

The minister said these things in response to questions from journalists after the training parade of the 43rd BCS (Police) batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi on Saturday (March 28, 2026).

In response to journalists’ questions about whether Ziaur Rahman’s name will be included in the constitution as the proclaimer of independence, the Home Minister said that a committee related to constitutional reform will be formed and detailed discussions will be held there on all these issues. We will formulate everything on the basis of the July National Charter on a priority basis. There, the current expectations of the people of Bangladesh and the dreams of the martyrs of the July Uprising will be given importance.

The Minister further said that the Constitution Amendment Committee will formulate their draft by prioritizing the issues recognized in the ‘July National Charter’ as a document of political compromise. Later, a final decision will be taken on the basis of discussions through the first, second and third readings in the National Parliament as per the rules.

Later, in his speech as the chief guest at the certificate presentation ceremony among the new officers of the 43rd BCS (Police) batch, the Home Minister said, a new chapter in your life has begun from today. This uniform is not just a symbol of power – it is a symbol of responsibility, sacrifice and service. He urged the new officers to dedicate themselves to serving the country with honesty, courage and humanity.

At the event, the Minister sincerely congratulated the members of the 43rd BCS (Police) batch on the successful completion of their training and wished them all-round success in their professional and personal lives.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir and Principal (Additional IGP) of Bangladesh Police Academy GM Azizur Rahman were present at the event.
