Rajarbagh Police Lines was the first base for the declaration of Bangladesh’s War of Independence: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed

The minister made this statement while briefing reporters after paying tribute to the martyred police members of the great liberation war by laying wreaths at the Rajarbagh Police Memorial in the capital on the occasion of the Great Independence and National Day on Thursday (March 26, 2026).

The minister said that the first massacre began at Rajarbagh Police Lines on the night of March 25, 1971, and the context for the declaration of independence was created from here. He mentioned that the then Major Ziaur Rahman declared a mutiny in Chittagong after receiving the news of this massacre and declared the independence of Bangladesh in the early hours of March 26. Later, on March 27, he formally declared the independence of Bangladesh from the Kalurghat radio station and sought the support of the world. He called this the ‘real history’ of the declaration of independence of Bangladesh.

Recalling the sacrifice of the martyrs, he said that the blood donation of the police force of the Rajarbagh Police Lines was the beginning of the declaration of the War of Independence.

The minister further said that after the President and Prime Minister paid their respects at the Savar National Memorial, he also paid his respects there as a member of the cabinet. Then, after paying his respects at the tomb of the independence proclaimer, martyr President Ziaur Rahman, he came to Rajarbagh.

He mentioned the resumption of the Independence Day parade after a long time as a matter of joy and said that according to the wishes of the martyrs, democratic practices will continue in the country in a new way.

In response to a question from journalists regarding the handover of the accused in the Osman Hadi murder case from India, the minister said that a formal request has been sent through diplomatic channels through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to bring back the accused in the Osman Hadi murder case. The process of handing them over to Bangladesh as per the Extradition Treaty is underway.

Regarding police reform, the Home Minister said that discussions are underway on technical assistance, training and capacity building from various developed countries of the world to make the police force more prosperous and modern. He said that fruitful discussions were held with the Ambassador of Switzerland in this regard yesterday.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Manjur Morshed Chowdhury and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner (Acting) Md. Sarwar, BPM and other senior officials of Bangladesh Police were present at the briefing.
