China wants to deepen practical cooperation with Bangladesh

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday. The meeting discussed bilateral relations as well as various regional and international issues.

The meeting, held on February 23, is considered one of the prime minister’s initial high-level diplomatic engagements after the formation of the new government, the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka said.

At the meeting, Ambassador Yao Wen congratulated the prime minister on assuming office and the successful completion of Bangladesh’s 13th national parliamentary election. He also conveyed the warm greetings and congratulatory message of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to the prime minister.

The Chinese ambassador said Beijing is willing to strengthen political mutual trust and deepen comprehensive and practical cooperation to advance the long-standing friendship between the two countries. He reiterated China’s support for the new government’s efforts to ensure good governance.

At the same time, he reiterated China’s support for Bangladesh’s national unity, stability, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. Also supporting Bangladesh’s stance against foreign interference, the ambassador urged Dhaka to play a more active role in the regional and international arena.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman thanked the Chinese leadership for the greetings and reiterated Bangladesh’s firm commitment to the ‘one-China policy’. He said Bangladesh attaches great importance to the traditional friendship with China and is keen to deepen the relationship by strengthening engagement and cooperation in various sectors.

The Prime Minister further noted that Dhaka wants to take the China-Bangladesh ‘Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership’ to new heights through enhanced engagement and multi-dimensional cooperation.
