National Martyrs’ Day Observed at the Algerian Embassy in Dhaka

Diplomatic Desk:

On Wednessday (February 18, 2026) the Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka observed the National Martyrs’ Day with a solemn and meaningful program, bringing together prominent figures from various sectors, including academics, journalists, business leaders, students, and dignitaries.

The event began with the ceremonial hosting of the Algerian national flag, followed by a minute of silence to honor the sacrifices of the martyrs who laid down their lives for Algeria’s freedom.

Following the solemn tribute, special prayers were recited by Mowlana Muhammad AnowarulHaque, offering peace and blessings for the martyrs. The attendees then watched a captivating film showcasing the significance of Algeria’s National Martyrs’ Day, further highlighting the importance of this commemoration.

In his address, Abdelouahab SAIDANI, Ambassador of Algeria to Bangladesh, conveyed heartfelt gratitude and respect for the martyrs, reflecting on their invaluable sacrifices. His speech, delivered with deep reverence, underscored the universal principles of justice, human dignity, and the right of people to shape their destiny—values for which the martyrs of Algeria fought tirelessly.

Ambassador SAIDANI emphasized the theme of the day: “Faithful to the Martyrs’ Pact,” explaining its profound significance as a reminder to honor the martyrs not only through remembrance but through continued progress and action. The speech highlighted Algeria’s journey from colonial oppression to independence and the moral compass that the martyrs’ sacrifices provide for the nation’s sovereignty and dignity.

The Ambassador also spoke on the global recognition of Algeria’s right to self-determination by the United Nations on February 18, 1957, and the historic efforts to preserve the martyrs’ legacy. Drawing attention to the life and sacrifice of martyrs like Larbi Ben M’hidi and DidoucheMourad, he urged all present to preserve their memories through unity, truth, and dedication to the nation’s development.

A special mention was made of Algeria’s ongoing commitment to historical truth, including the passage of a law criminalizing the injustices of French colonization. The law serves not only as a tribute to the martyrs but as a foundation for building stronger international relations based on mutual respect and understanding.

Ambassador SAIDANI closed his speech by extending his admiration for the martyrs of Bangladesh, noting the shared values of sacrifice and resilience between the two nations. He emphasized the importance of honoring their memory and legacy through actions that contribute to the continued progress of both Algeria and Bangladesh.

The observance concluded with a renewed commitment to the martyrs’ pact, symbolizing the unbroken bond between past sacrifices and future aspirations. It was a moving and reflective occasion that honored the sacrifices of those who gave everything for the freedom and dignity of Algeria.

The Algerian Embassy in Dhaka continues to affirm its dedication to preserving the memory of the martyrs and ensuring that their sacrifices guide Algeria’s path forward, as it grows stronger and more united. The bond of friendship between Algeria and Bangladesh remains unshakable, and together, the two nations strive for peace, prosperity, and dignity.
