Editor, Mohammad Shajibul-al-Rajib:

The 90th birth anniversary of the great freedom fighter, founding chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and martyred President Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam is today, Monday, January 19. On this day, his colorful life, patriotism and unforgettable contribution are being remembered with deep respect across the country.

Ziaur Rahman was born on January 19, 1936, in Bagbari village, Gabtoli upazila, Bogra. He became a courageous guide for a leaderless and directionless nation. At the beginning of the great Liberation War in 1971, he inspired the Bengali nation to unite in resistance by declaring independence. His strong leadership and courage in the Liberation War are considered a unique chapter in the history of the nation.

Ziaur Rahman was one of the sector commanders in the Liberation War and later served as the commander of Z Force. In recognition of his outstanding bravery and contribution on the battlefield, he was awarded the title of ‘Bir Uttam’, which is a symbol of his patriotism and self-sacrifice.

After independence, he served in the Bangladesh Army. After being appointed as a brigade commander in Comilla, he became the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army in 1972. Through successive promotions, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier in 1973, Major General at the end of the same year, and Lieutenant General on 25 August 1975 and appointed as the Chief of the Bangladesh Army.

His role in the governance of the state was significant. On 21 April 1977, he assumed the office of President of Bangladesh. Later, on 1 September 1978, he formed the nationalist party BNP based on a 19-point program, which ushered in a new era in the country’s democratic politics.

He was killed by some errant members of the army at the Chittagong Circuit House on May 30, 1981. The entire nation was stunned by his martyrdom that day. The sky and air of Bengal became heavy with the tears of crores of people, and the world also expressed deep grief.

The life and work of martyred President Ziaur Rahman is still a source of inspiration for the nation. His contribution to the issues of independence, sovereignty and democracy will be remembered forever in history.
