The current interim government is giving utmost importance to the trial of those involved in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, a frontline fighter of the July uprising, and is committed to ensuring justice in this incident, said Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd).

The advisor made this comment while briefing journalists after the 18th meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Law and Order and the overall preparation and law and order meeting related to the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JKSU) elections-2025 at the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday (December 22, 2025) morning.

The advisor said that no one involved in the murder of Osman Hadi will be given any kind of concession. Already, 10 people involved in the murder have been arrested by the joint forces (Police, RAB and BGB). These include Shaheda Parveen Samia, the wife of the mastermind of the murder, Faisal Karim, his mother and father, brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Shipu and motorcycle owner Abdul Hannan. In addition, the motorcycle used in the murder, 02 foreign pistols, 02 magazines, 41 rounds of ammunition and 01 toy pistol have been recovered. He said, the mastermind of the incident, Faisal Karim Masud, was quickly identified and brought under the law. However, in the interest of discovering the motive of the murder and maintaining confidentiality, it is not possible to provide details on this matter right now. However, considerable progress has been made in this regard and the law enforcement agencies are trying hard to find him (the mastermind).
Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said that the DHAKSHU, JAKSU, RAKSHU and CHAKSU elections have already been completed in a fair, impartial and peaceful manner. It has been possible to complete these elections smoothly with the joint efforts of the students, teachers, officials and law enforcement agencies of the concerned universities. He expressed hope that the JAKSU elections will be completed in a fair, safe, acceptable and peaceful manner.
The Home Affairs Advisor said that the operation of the law enforcement agencies to recover looted and illegal weapons is ongoing. In order to strengthen and accelerate this further and to suppress fascist terrorists, Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2 was launched on December 13, 2025. He said that 6598 people have been arrested through this operation till December 20, 2025. In addition, 56 firearms, 437 rounds of bullets, 137 rounds of cartridges, 62 indigenous weapons, grenades, mortar shells, gun powder, fireworks, bomb-making materials, etc. have been recovered in this operation. A total of 13,505 people, including 6,907 people, have been arrested on the basis of cases and warrants.
The advisor also said that adequate security preparations have been made for the biggest religious festivals of Christians, Christmas and Thirty-First Night. He said that the DMP has arrested 17 people in connection with the attack on the offices of Prothom Alo and Daily Star newspapers. Moreover, gunmen have been provided for the security of the editors of the two newspapers and security has been increased at their homes. He said that 10 people have also been arrested in connection with the beating and burning to death of a garment worker in Mymensingh. He also said that maximum security measures have been taken for the arrival of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in the country on December 25, 2025.
Several important instructions were given to the law enforcement agencies in the meeting. These include – arresting terrorists and miscreants at a higher rate through Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2; further increasing and intensifying intelligence surveillance; keeping specialized forces on standby for the security of important national KPI establishments; increasing search activities by setting up check posts in important places in the country including Dhaka metropolis; monitoring it regularly through the control room of the police headquarters and monitoring the law and order situation around the clock through CCTV cameras installed in different places in the city.
Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor on Home Affairs Md. Khoda Bakhas Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor of Jagannath University Professor Md. Rezaul Karim, among others, were present at the briefing.
