Meditation Essential for Conscious Living and Social Harmony: Nepal Ambassador Ghanashyam Bhandari

On the occasion of World Meditation Day 2025, the Embassy of Nepal in Dhaka, in collaboration with the Jeevan Vigyan Foundation, Nepal, organized a special meditation program titled “Meditation: Awakening Happiness and Inner Peace” at the Embassy premises on Sunday (21 December 2025) morning.

In his keynote speech, Nepal’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Mr. Ghanashyam Bhandari, highlighted that Nepal was among the six core countries that proposed the resolution to declare 21 December as World Meditation Day. The resolution was unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2024. He added that the resolution was co-sponsored by Andorra, India, Liechtenstein, Mexico, and Sri Lanka, and received support from over 70 UN Member States, reflecting the universal significance of meditation.

The Ambassador stated, “Nepal does not view meditation merely as a modern wellness trend; it is a living heritage deeply rooted in our history and civilization.” He noted that for millennia, Nepal has been a land of meditation, spiritual retreat, and self-inquiry. Many sages and yogis have sought refuge in its mountains, forests, and river valleys in pursuit of self-realization.

He further emphasized that in today’s world, fraught with wars and armed conflicts, technological disruptions, social fragmentation, and escalating climate crises, meditation has become increasingly important. Through mindfulness, self-discipline, and inner awareness, meditation helps individuals achieve mental calmness and clarity, while fostering harmony and compassion within society.

Highlighting Nepal’s spiritual heritage as the birthplace of Lord Buddha, the Ambassador said that Buddha’s teachings on mindfulness, compassion, and the middle path have profoundly influenced the spiritual journey of humanity. Nepal’s Hindu, yogic, and indigenous traditions also embrace meditation as a vital practice for self-discipline, ethical living, and harmony with nature.

Acknowledging the collaboration with the Jeevan Vigyan Foundation, the Ambassador mentioned that the Foundation’s concept of “Soul Jagaran” or self-awakening ensures that meditation is not a retreat from life but rather inspires conscious and responsible living.

The meditation session was conducted by Mrs. Anima Bhandari, an instructor from the Jeevan Vigyan Foundation. She introduced participants to Self-Awakening Meditation (Swajagaran), emphasizing mindful breathing and inner awareness. The session included Namaskar Pranayama, Beej Pranayama, and guided meditation exercises aimed at achieving deep relaxation, calmness, and inner peace.

The program was attended by ambassadors and high commissioners from various countries, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Nepali community, business and civil society leaders, and members of the Bangladeshi media.
