AmCham hosts focus group discussion on “Powering Bangladesh Toward Energy Security”

The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) hosted a focus group discussion on “Powering Bangladesh Toward Energy Security” at the Sheraton Hotel in Dhaka on Tuesday (December 9, 2025). The event was co-sponsored by Chevron Bangladesh—the country’s largest gas producer, which has invested nearly $4.2 billion in the past 30 years to contribute significantly to Bangladesh’s economic growth and community development. The company currently supplies about 60 percent of the country’s total gas demand.

In his opening remarks, AmCham Bangladesh President Mr. Syed Ershad Ahmed said that energy security is of utmost importance for Bangladesh. He noted that the country’s energy sector still faces challenges such as persistent fuel shortages, aging transmission systems, stagnation in gas exploration, and import dependence—which are hindering reliable energy supply and industrial development. To address this situation, he emphasized strengthening good governance of regulatory agencies, accelerating new gas exploration, modernizing infrastructure, expanding renewable energy, and ensuring investment-friendly policies.

The discussion session was moderated by Mr. Paul Frost, Commercial Counselor of the US Embassy, which reflects the commitment to further strengthen US-Bangladesh trade and investment cooperation.

Also present at the event were Mr. Eric M. Walker, Vice President of AmCham and President of Chevron Bangladesh, Professor M. Tamim, Vice Chancellor of IUB and renowned expert on energy and mineral resources, Mr. Muhammad Imrul Kabir, Director of Corporate Affairs of Chevron Bangladesh, AmCham members from the power and energy sectors, and high-level officials of various leading companies.
