Australian Deputy High Commissioner Clinton Paubeck reiterates Australia’s strong support for judicial independence in Bangladesh

Australian Deputy High Commissioner Clinton Paubeck has reiterated Australia’s strong support for judicial independence and reform efforts in Bangladesh. She attended a seminar in Chittagong on Saturday (6 December 2025), jointly organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

Speakers at the seminar said that the establishment of Commercial Courts in Bangladesh would be an important step in speeding up the resolution of commercial disputes and increasing investor confidence. This initiative is essential for the overall modernization and efficiency of the judiciary.

The Commercial Courts are being implemented as part of the larger judicial reforms underway under the leadership of Chief Justice Dr. Syed Rafat Ahmed. Technical and institutional support is being provided for the implementation of this initiative under the UNDP’s ‘Judicial Reform Support’ programme.

During the event, Australia signed a Letter of Endorsement, announcing a new support package to further strengthen judicial reforms. This support will primarily contribute to the implementation of justice, increasing access to justice and accelerating the digital transformation of the judiciary.

Australian Deputy High Commissioner Clinton Pabke told the press, “An efficient, modern and independent judiciary is a key element in a country’s development and creating an investment-friendly environment. Australia is proud to be part of this important reform initiative in Bangladesh.”
