Maitri Diwas will take India-Bangladesh partnership to new heights: Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma

The High Commission of India in Dhaka celebrated India’s Maitri Diwas 2025 on Saturday (December 6, 2025). The event, organized at the Indian Cultural Centre in Dhaka, was celebrated for the 54th time.

Maitri Diwas commemorates the historic day in 1971 when India recognized Bangladesh as a sovereign and independent state, just ten days before independence. It is considered a symbol of India’s unwavering support for Bangladesh.

In his inaugural address, High Commissioner Pranay Verma referred to this day as an unwavering milestone in the history of India and Bangladesh. He said, “India seeks to build a stable, positive, inclusive and forward-looking relationship with Bangladesh based on mutual respect. The people of both our countries are the key partners in this relationship. We hope that, in the light of the shared sacrifices of the past and the new aspirations of the future, both countries will work together to fulfil the aspirations of our people.”

The event featured performances by Bangladeshi artists, highlighting the rich cultural and artistic ties between the two countries. Freedom fighters, cultural figures, youth and distinguished guests also participated in the event.

Friendship Day is not just a day to commemorate history; it is a symbol of the shared history, values and mutual compassion between the two neighboring countries. The celebration commemorates the shared sacrifices between India and Bangladesh, as well as reaffirms the commitment to future cooperation.
